For period properties: timber casement or sash, thermally broken aluminium where the contemporary fits, never UPVC if the building has any heritage significance. For modern extensions: aluminium frames give slim sightlines and good thermal performance. For listed buildings: heritage-grade timber or Crittall-style steel where appropriate.
